🍽️ "Square Roots" restaurant taking over the old Lagniappe space

A new restaurant and coffee shop are set to open soon in the Historic Coliseum Building at 27th and Lake, a key commercial space that has sat vacant since the short-lived Lagniappe Restaurant and Du Nord Cocktail Room closed more than a year ago.

It's a venture from Jared Brewington, best known as the proprietor of 38th and Chicago's Funky Grits and the concession-oriented Official Fried Chicken. He's planning an "Afro-Creole Southern Cuisine" restaurant called Square Roots, run as a nonprofit that trains young people for culinary jobs. An affiliated breakfast and coffee shop will take over the former Du Nord Cocktail Room around the corner.

Both operations are scheduled to open in August.

Jared is a fifth-generation south Minneapolis native and one of those chronically-civically-involved types, having run for the legislature and served on the boards of Meet Minneapolis, YouthLink, and the Washburn High School Foundation, among others.
